Rough terrain cranes are mounted on an undercarriage with four rubber tires designed for pick-and-carry operations and for off-road and “rough terrain” applications. Outriggers are used to level and stabilize the crane for hoisting. When a project requires the lifting and moving of heavy materials on both paved surfaces and rough or uneven ground, a rough terrain crane is an excellent solution.Rough terrain cranes are mobile cranes that are designed to manoeuvre over many different types of surfaces. This type of crane is built on a body with four large rubber tires that are able to climb over uneven ground and keep traction on difficult terrain. They are more compact than most other types of off-road cranes, which means that they can get into tighter spaces. Outriggers provide stability for lifting operations and, by using a hydraulic boom and hoist, rough terrain cranes are able to lift heavy loads to exceptional heights. Most rough terrain cranes have 4-wheel drive to better navigate off-road.
While the primary benefit of the rough terrain crane might be its ability to maneuvre those unfavourable terrain job sites, the list of the RT crane advantages goes on.
Overall, the main difference between the two types is that all-terrain cranes can travel on public roads and off-road too. They often travel at the same speed on both. On the other hand, as we have said, rough terrain cranes can usually only drive off-road.
